Amanda Seyfried Diet and Weight Loss

Many people on the internet have wondered what diet and exercise program Amanda Seyfried followed to lose what has to be a considerable amount of weight.

Initially, I assumed Amanda Seyfried was very tall by how thin her arms and legs were. It turns out Seyfried is only about 5ft 3.5in tall! This is actually not very tall at all. Initial pre-weight loss estimates for the star range from 120-130lbs, while today I would be surprised if Seyfried exceeds 115lbs (keep in mind I am estimating.)

and unlike most women, seems to have retained her curves after dieting.

Odds are, this is likely genetic (or the work of Hollywood fairy dust.) Keep in mind that for women there is typically a hierarchy of fat loss – first the waist, chest, and hips – then gradual loss allover the body – and then the thighs….Usually by the time your arms and thighs are tiny, your chest has been gone for ages…But not so for all women.

Like most of us, celebrities like Amanda range from being very body image obsessed (for very good reasons considering their very careers depend on how they look) – “I used to live, eat and sleep by an exercise schedule, and I couldn’t enjoy myself if I didn’t exercise…” to more practical and self-accepting “…And then I realized – what a waste of time! My soft parts are probably never going away.”

Typically, when Amanda Seyfriend does diet she follows a simple, healthy, moderate meal plan -

  • Salads with protein – think grilled chicken on a bed of greens with tomatoes
  • Broiled salmon and steamed broccoli
  • Avoids junk food
  • and skips dessert

Amanda Seyfried Raw Diet

Unlike most of Hollywood, Seyfried does not try to subsist on raw food multi-day “cleanses.” Amanda tried a raw food cleanse to try to quickly lose her “belly fat” in order to look thinner for an appearance, and quickly discovered that living on simple sugars and vegetables left her feeling horrible by early afternoon. Typically raw food and juice cleanses result in weight loss that is almost 100% water weight. If you are at all sensitive to sugar, the high intake of carbohydrates – without the balancing effects of protein – will definitely make you feel ill. (Honestly, a better approach would be low calorie protein shakes and water if you simply must…)

However, like all things – there are benefits to eating more raw fruits and vegetables. These days Amanda like to incorporate raw foods into her breakfast and early morning routine. Examples include -

Raw oatmeal (typically you make raw oatmeal by soaking oats overnight in the refrigerator) topped with blueberries

Smoothies (check out this post on how to make your own green smoothie)

Other healthy diet options could include replacing high calorie potato chips with baked kale chips (why not raw you ask? More people have access to ovens vs food dehydrators and to get raw chips crunchy you would have to add nuts – this would increase the calorie count of the snack ) -

 

Baked Kale Chips

1 bunch kale, cleaned and dried
1 TBSP olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
Dash of balsamic vinegar
I like to add an extra kick with a sprinkle of chili powder

Preheat oven to 350. Whisk oil, salt and pepper, and balsamic together in a bowl. Tear kale into bowl and toss with the dressing. Bake about 15 minutes, until crispy. Source – the new Fit Yummy Mummy cookbook.

Amanda Seyfried Workout

Amanda Seyfried also exercises intensely (although likely moderate by Hollywood standards) in addition to eating a healthy diet.

  • Jogs for 30min 4-5 days per week
  • Weightlifting for 45min 3 days per week
  • Pilates on weekends
  • Yoga (periodic)

So three days per week Amanda spends 1 hr 15min working out, the remaining days range from 30min to 1hr. Keep that in mind!

If you want a look similar to Amanda’s -

Next focus on cardio and stretching – that’s what gives these kind of starlets that thin/limber look.

Finally, add in 3 weightlifting sessions per week – keep in mind that most Hollywood actresses are doing weightlifting circuits to keep them thin and toned (check out Visual Impact for Women for this kind of no bulk fat burning workout.) You can tell someone like Amanda Seyfried is not doing weightlifting focused on gaining muscle just due to the overall lack of prominent muscles – rather the focus is on higher reps and burning calories while maintaining strength.
