Links for May 9th 2010

I came across some interesting links this week -

First of all Malcolm Gladwell has a new book out “What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures.” (Gladwell is known for two successful previous books Outliers: The Story of Success and The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference.) This is a compilation of various essays publsihed in the New Yorker. Of interest is one on the history of the birth control pill and talks about what is “natural” as far as women’s reproductive health is concerned. This article is not new, but still interesting. I found the full text here. Thanks to Mark Young for the initial mention. In that same post Mark also discusses a couple popular rehab protocol products, and this is always worth a look if you are nursing any injuries. Also a good post on barefoot running I still intend to get to when I have time.

Good post of Mark’s Daily Apple about Thoracic Mobility – there’s a link to this thoracic mobility protocol on StrongLifts.com.  Great resource!

On a similar thread, Alwyn Cosgrove talks about how its the activity that builds cardiovascular strength and not the other way around. In the article he mentions this article in Runner’s World about Lance Armstrong’s marathon performance (logic being – if Lance has the highest recorded VO2 max, why didn’t he win the marathon?) Here is the main page for that discussion.

I have also started to expand the list of podcasts I try to listen to every week – this week I caught Mike Robertson’s “In the Trenches” featuring Joe Dowdell and Dr. Brooke Kal. The interview is a kind of a promo/preview of their new book coming out Ultimate You: 4 Phase Total Body Makeover for Women. I had already heard about the book from various lists I am on, but this interview made me a little more curious. A lot of the book focuses on female specific hormone issues. This may be useful to some of you. Otherwise, I recommend checking out the interview to see if this is something you are interested in.
